All About Reflective Pavement Markers and Line Marking for Roads

Corsign’s reflective pavement markers are perfect for your next road project

Road safety is a crucial aspect of our daily lives. Every day, we use roads and highways to travel, commute and transport goods, so therefore it is imperative to ensure that the roads we are travelling on are safe for everyone.

Road safety depends on several factors such as road design, driver behaviour and traffic control. One of the most critical factors that contributes to road safety is roadside signage. This plays a vital role in guiding drivers, pedestrians, and other road users. In this blog, we will discuss reflective pavement markers and line markings for roads and how they contribute to road safety.

Reflective Pavement Markers

Reflective pavement markers are essential safety signage tools. These are placed on roads and highways to guide drivers, especially at night or in low-light conditions. The markers use retroreflective technology, which means that they reflect light back to its source. This technology helps make these markers visible even in low-light conditions, making them an essential tool for road safety.

Reflective pavement markers come in various shapes and sizes, and they can be classified into two types: raised pavement markers and recessed pavement markers. Raised pavement markers are installed on the surface of the road and they protrude above the surface, making them easy to see. Recessed pavement markers, on the other hand, are installed below the surface of the road, making them less visible than raised pavement markers.

Line Marking

Line marking is another crucial aspect of road safety. Line marking involves painting lines on the road to guide drivers, pedestrians, and other road users. Line marking is essential for delineating lanes, indicating turning points, and guiding drivers during low-light conditions. Line marking is also essential for marking pedestrian crossings, bike lanes, and other important road features.

Line marking is done using different types of paint, depending on the type of road and the expected traffic volume. Thermoplastic paint is commonly used for line marking on high-traffic roads, while water-based paint is used for low-traffic roads. The type of paint used for line marking is also essential for ensuring that the lines remain visible for a long period of time.

Safety signage services

Road safety signage requires regular maintenance to ensure that it remains visible and effective. Safety signage services involves regular inspection, repair, and replacement of road safety signage. This includes reflective pavement markers, line markings and other road safety features. Safety signage services are critical in ensuring that road safety signage remains effective and visible, especially during low-light conditions.

Safety signage services also involves the use of advanced technology, such as retroreflective technology, which helps make road safety signage visible during low-light conditions. Safety signage services also involve the use of high-quality paint, which ensures that the lines remain visible for a long time, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.

Road Traffic Signage

Road traffic signage is another essential aspect of road safety. Road traffic signage includes signs that indicate speed limits, no parking zones, stop signs, yield signs, and other important road features. Road traffic signage helps guide drivers and other road users, reducing the risk of accidents.

Road traffic signage also includes electronic signs, which are used to display important information such as traffic conditions, road closures, and other relevant information. Electronic signs are effective in reducing traffic congestion, providing real-time information to drivers, and ensuring that road users are aware of the latest road conditions.

Benefits of Reflective Pavement Markings

Reflective pavement markings offer several benefits that make them an essential part of road safety and traffic management. Here are some of the key benefits of reflective pavement markings:

  1. Increased Visibility: Reflective pavement markings are designed to reflect light from vehicle headlights, making them highly visible at night and in low-light conditions. This increases the visibility of road markings, reducing the risk of accidents, and improving overall road safety.
  2. Better Guidance: Reflective pavement markings provide clear guidance to drivers, guiding them along the correct lane, alerting them to potential hazards, and providing important information such as speed limits and road directions. This reduces confusion and improves traffic flow, making the road network more efficient.
  3. Improved Durability: Reflective pavement markings are made with high-quality materials that are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, heavy traffic, and frequent use. This means that they last longer than standard markings, reducing the need for frequent maintenance and repair.
  4. Cost-effective: While reflective pavement markings may be initially more expensive than standard markings, they are cost-effective in the long run due to their increased durability and longer lifespan. They also contribute to improved road safety, reducing the risk of accidents and their associated costs.
  5. Compliance with Regulations: Reflective pavement markings are compliant with all relevant regulations and standards, ensuring that road safety and traffic management requirements are met.

What colour road reflectors should I use?

If permanent marking needs to be done, then you will also need to install raised reflective pavement markers. These reflective pavement markers, commonly known as RRPMs and cats’ eyes, are available in a range of colours to signify different features on the road. They also make up the last leg of the road.

Let’s see what all the colours mean:

Yellow pavement markings are placed on the dividing line to separate traffic. These markers outline medians and islands, as well as being on the right edge of dual carriageways.

Redreflectors are placed along the left edge lines of dual carriageways.

White reflectors may be placed on lanes or in between dashed lines, as well as on the sides of broken lines.

Blue road markers can be used to identify water supply points and fire hydrants. They can be installed 100 mm from the road shoulder. This allows for the easy placement of water sources or fire hydrants. For other purposes, blue markers should not be used.

Stick ‘n’ Stomps and temporary reflective markers

Often, reflective markers will be required when new road surfaces have just been laid. But sometimes new line marking is done only after the road has been opened to traffic.

Temporary pavement markers (also known as stick ‘n’ stomps) are an excellent short-term solution for marking asphalt and pavements prior to permanent line marking. The temporary pavement markers can be used to draw lanes or define edges in advance of permanent longitudinal line-marking.

Stick-‘n’-stomps are available in yellow or blue and include a Class 1A reflective strip on hard, high-impact plastic. The inexpensive solution makes new roads safer. Also, it has a clear, removable cover that easily protects the reflective film from damage during sealing. Request a quote for temporary pavement markers form us today.

Installing reflective pavement markers

Before you install reflective pavement markers, you need to first check that the necessary road authority specifications have been met. For local roads, you might also want to consult local councils. If you have any questions about how to proceed with line marking, the local body will provide guidance.
