What are the Black & Yellow Caution Signs I See at my Workplace?

Are you aware of the different types of Australian safety signs?

Considering that they have been categorised into 6 main types in order to be easily identifiable, it is worthwhile familiarising yourself with them. All safety signs apply a consistent design across similar functions. By getting an understanding of this, you can determine what you may require within in your workplace in Perth.

#1 Prohibition Signs – CAN’T DO

When trying to convey to people that ‘they can’t do’ something, you’ll need a prohibition sign. This sign has the one with the universally recognisable red circle with a diagonal line through it. This signage is useful to prevent people from entering private property or signal that people aren’t allowed to smoke in an area, for example.

#2 Mandatory Signs – MUST DO

As the name suggests, a mandatory sign is a must. This sign indicates a particular instruction that must be followed. A mandatory sign is recognisable by a symbol or pictogram within a blue circle and on a white background. If your workplace is one that requires protective clothing or equipment, you would have likely seen such mandatory signs as ‘Foot Protection Must Be Worn In This Area’ orSafety Mask Must be Worn.’

The next 2 types of safety signs are classified as Hazard Signs:

#3 Danger Signs

If your worksite has hazardous areas, _ you need to warn individuals about potentially life-threatening situations. You can do this via the use of danger signs. The familiar red oval inside a black rectangle with the word DANGER in bold, capital letters, alerts people to the threat. You have no doubt seen many danger signs such as ‘HIGH VOLTAGE’ around various sites in Perth.

#4 Warning Signs

When NOT life-threatening, a warning sign lets you know you could still get hurt. These are easy to identify with their yellow background and black triangle around the hazard symbol. A warning sign such as ‘SLIPPERY WHEN WET’ is one you may have seen within office buildings or hospitals.

The last 2 types of safety signs are informative signs:

#5 Emergency Information Signs – SAFETY FIRST

If something goes wrong within your Perth worksite, emergency information signs can help individuals find the location of, or directions to, your emergency related facilities such as emergency exits, first aid, or safety equipment. The green background with white writing and symbols is instantly identifiable for safety. Common safety signs include, ‘FIRST AID KIT or EMERGENCY PHONE’.

#6 Fire Signs – FIRE EQUIP

You can’t miss these signs – they are bright red, making them easy to spot around fire alarms and fire protection equipment. All the text and imagery are white and stand out against the red background. These fire signs are used to indicate the location of all your fire equipment, such as fire extinguishers, fire blankets, fire hoses, and more.
