What’s the difference between Class 1 and Class 2 reflective sheeting and tapes?

Are you familiar with the different safety jargon used within the safety signage industry?

Today, we are discussing the most commonly used Class 1 and Class 2 reflective sheeting, and the difference between the two.

In 2017 the Australian Standard AS1906.1 Retroreflective materials and devices for road traffic control purposes was updated and further classes for retroreflective sheeting were introduced. As such, Class 1 is now also referred to as Class 400 and Class 2 is Class 100.

What is reflective sheeting?

Reflective sheeting or vinyl is designed to improve visibility in potentially hazardous work conditions. If you are on a mine site, for example, using reflective materials can help individuals see in a dark underground location. Reflective sheeting and tapes are an essential part of safety within all industries.

Class 1 or Class 400 Retroreflective Sheeting

This type of reflective sheeting has a higher grade of reflectivity. Class 1, or Class 400, is identifiable by its honeycomb pattern. This type of safety signage tape is used where high visibility is required 24-7. It is a premium, top-tier grade reflective material that reflects light from a multitude of angles. Every traffic sign you see on a public road, of high importance and required to be seen at night, must be a minimum Class 400 as a matter of compliance. From regulatory signs, like stop and speed limit signs, to large freeway directional signs, and even temporary roadwork signage – Class 400 is the reflective sheeting that is used for these applications.

Class 2 or Class 100 Retroreflective Sheeting

The Class 2, or Class 100 reflective sheeting is more used for non-critical, off-road situations. This tape is used in situations that require high visibility in poor light conditions. Examples can include work premise signage, car parks, shopping centres, and confined spaces.

What are some other reasons reflective sheeting and reflective tapes are important?

  • Reflective tape can highlight objects near driveways and within parking lots.
  • Reflective tape can protect your mailbox from being hit by unaware drivers.
  • Reflective tape is used on decks to help passengers and boats avoid accidents.
  • Reflective tape is used for visibility of vehicles.
